I spent my Monday doing something completely unrelated to Pot + Pantry, which is good for clearing the mind sometimes. Yesterday was Day One of Makeshift Society, a “clubhouse for creatives” opened by my pal and mentor Rena Tom. I was honored when she recently asked me to paint signage on her windows, and jumped at the opportunity.

I’m proud of how they turned out, though my hyper critical inner voice tells me they are Monets.* But I’m convincing myself that the imperfections of my freehand painting add to the charm and quirkiness. Nothing’s perfect.

*NOTE: Lest you think my ego is falsely inflated, I should clarify I’m using the definition of Monet as established by the brilliant movie Clueless.

Tai: Do you think she’s pretty?

Cher:  No, she’s a full-on Monet.

Tai: What’s a monet?

Cher: It’s like a painting, see? From far away, it’s OK, but up close, it’s a big old mess.
